Local trends are calculated with a least-squares fit of 10-day,
1-degree resolution grids of sea level. A trend, bias, annual, and
semi-annual terms are fit simultaneously. The grids were derived by
estimating at each point P
on a 1° X 1° regular
grid a weighted average of adjacent (within a 4° radius).
Where, wi =
exp(–σ d2);
d
= spherical distance between P(φ,λ)
and the data points (φi,λi);
σ = smoothness parameter
defined by the half weight t,
such that: exp(–σ
t2) = 1/2. For our
grids, we have selected t
= 2°.
Please note that these trends have been determined for only a ten-year
period, reflecting the impact of decadal scale climate variability on
the regional distribution of sea level rise.
